“ The fashion industry’s touchstone is nearly always France—more precisely Paris, sure, but the entire country possesses a mystique that has captivated creative influencers and innovators for generations. It is the home of haute couture, birthplace of prêt-à-porter and chosen headquarters of designers ranging from Jean Patou, Christian Dior and Madeleine Vionnet to Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and many, many more… So, on the dawn of Bastille Day (a.k.a. French National Day), it seems particularly àpropos to laud one of its most iconic designs: the marinière, or sailor shirt. Traditionally worn by low-ranking French sailors as they swabbed the decks, the navy-and-white striped top’s creation is attributed to the wives of merchants and fisherman, who applied a heritage stitch technique to pullovers, producing a garment of unsurpassed water and wind resistance.
